8. International Conference on Cartography and GIS

Representatives of the Commission for Maps and the Internet attended the 8th International Conference on Cartography and GIS in Nessebar, Bulgaria. Many papers on maps and the Internet were presented at the conference. In addition, a meeting of the Commission was held in Nessebar. Representatives of the Commission Karel Jedlička and Otakar Čerba chaired two sessions of the conference - Web Cartography and Digital Atlases (5 papers) and Remote Sensing Technologies for Cartographic Purposes (6 presentations). 


The conference, organized after a four-year break, was attended by experts from 20 countries. Many thanks go to the conference organizers, including the Vice-Chair of the Commission on Maps and the Internet, Stefan Bonchev, and Prof. Temenoujka Bandrova (ICA vice-president and Executive Committee liaison of the Commission on Maps and the Internet).

Next year (from the 13th to the 18th of August), the 31st International Cartographic Conference (ICC 2023, http://icc2023.org ) will be held in Cape Town, South Africa. Maps and the Internet is one of the themes of the conference. A business meeting of our committee will also be held at the conference. We are also planning to hold a pre-conference workshop. I hope to meet with all the members and admittees of the commission in South Africa to discuss our research activities and the future direction of the commission. I will be glad to have your active participation in preparing the commission's activities. In particular, I would welcome interested parties to organise a pre-conference workshop.

What's in store for us?

 A week ago, we recapped the past year. And what is in store for us in the Maps and Internet Commission this year❓ - First of all, we are looking forward to the International Cartographic Conference in Cape Town. We already have many submissions to our commission. We are also preparing the traditional pre-conference workshop (in collaboration with the Commission on Ubiquitous Mapping) and a business meeting during the conference. And, of course, we are looking forward to lots of informal meetings and discussions🫱‍🫲. - We can also promise regular updates about the world of maps and the Internet on our communication channels (social networks, blog, ICA newsletter, commission newsletter, Discord). - In the spring, we plan a video challenge, "The different faces of web cartography". - And there will certainly be many other events, conferences, workshops, webinars or hackathons that we will keep you posted on.
